Candles vs Wax Melts: Which Home Fragrance Is Right for You?
At Auroma Candle, we're often asked one question above all others: should I choose a candle or a wax melt? Both are beautiful ways to fragrance your home, but they suit different spaces, moods, and lifestyles. This guide will help you decide — and point you towards the scents we think you'll love.

Choosing by Scent Throw
Want fragrance that fills the room quickly? Wax melts are your answer. Because the wax is heated externally — either by a tea light or an electric burner — the fragrance oil is released rapidly and at a higher intensity than a candle flame can produce. They're ideal if you want to notice the scent as soon as you walk through the door.
Prefer a subtler, evolving fragrance? Our soy candle collection releases scent gradually as the wax pool grows, creating a gentler, more layered experience. This makes candles particularly well-suited to bedrooms, bathrooms, and intimate dining settings where you want fragrance to enhance — not overpower — the atmosphere.
Choosing by Room Size
- Small rooms (bedroom, bathroom, hallway): Either format works beautifully. Try our Lavender & Dead Sea Minerals wax melt or Rosewood & Velvet candle for a calming retreat scent.
- Medium rooms (living room, study): A candle is ideal for ambience; a wax melt will fill the space more fully. We love Dark Honey wax melts or the crisp, fresh Rock Salt & Driftwood candle here.
- Large or open-plan spaces: Wax melts win. Use two burners with complementary scents — for example, Sandalwood Spa and Just Patchouli — for a rich, layered effect. Alternatively, try the bold Marine candle as a statement centrepiece.
Choosing by Ambience
If the look of a flame matters to you — the soft, flickering glow on an evening in — a candle is irreplaceable. Our hand-poured soy candles are designed to be displayed as well as enjoyed. The Aqua Lume and Meadow Lily & Cotton Musk candles make especially elegant additions to a mantelpiece or dining table.
Wax melts, by contrast, are all about the fragrance experience. The burner itself can still be decorative, but there's no open flame — making them a practical choice for households with young children or pets where you want fragrance without an exposed flame nearby.
What Equipment Do You Need?
For Candles
Our candles are ready to use straight from the box. You'll need:
- Matches or a lighter
- A candle snuffer (recommended — safer than blowing out)
- A wick trimmer or small scissors
- A heat-resistant tray or coaster beneath the candle
For Wax Melts
You'll need a wax melt burner — either a traditional tea-light burner or an electric warmer. Electric burners offer more temperature control and are flameless, making them very safe for everyday use. Simply:
- Place one or two wax melt snap pieces in the dish of your burner.
- Light a tea light beneath (or switch on your electric burner).
- Allow the wax to melt — fragrance releases within minutes.
- When the scent fades, allow the wax to cool and solidify, then pop it out and replace.
Candle Safety — The Essentials
A candle is an open flame, so a few simple habits keep you safe and get the most from your purchase:
- Never leave a burning candle unattended and never go to sleep with one still lit.
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before every use to encourage an even burn and prevent mushrooming or excess soot. Trim again every 4 hours of burn time.
- First burn rule: On the first light, burn until the wax pool reaches the edge of the vessel (typically 2–4 hours). This prevents tunnelling and ensures an even burn for the life of the candle.
- Maximum burn time: Never burn for longer than 4 hours at a time. Extinguish, let the candle cool completely, trim the wick, then relight.
- Use a snuffer to extinguish — blowing out can scatter hot wax and allow the wick to continue smouldering.
- Keep away from draughts — a draught causes uneven burning and can produce smoke.
- Always place on a heat-resistant surface at least 1 metre clear of any surface above (including shelves). Keep away from electrical items, TVs, and antique or polished furniture.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets at all times.
- Stop burning when 2 cm of wax remains — do not burn to the base.
- Do not use if the glass vessel is cracked, chipped, or broken.
